There was no more warmth in Lucius Clyde’s world. There was only the freezing cold pressure threatening to burst him open from the inside out, his limbs and organs in a frozen hyperdrive, everything in his world moving too fast and too slow at the same time, caught in a time…
There were not words for exactly the type of emotions that whirled around inside of Lucius’ broken body. There was no estimate of time to give for the amount of sunrise to sunset in which he held his beloved in his arms. He watched fearfully with an open mouth as she had whispered her remaining words to him, that he wasn’t a monster, that he was loved, and for her sake, that he should continue. He’d had the chance to choke out an ‘I love you’ before she had grown limp in his arms.
He held her until she’d gone cold. From there, he was no clue what to do. All he knew was that he could not leave her here in this wasteland to rot. She deserved so much better. As painful as it was, as shuddering as it may have appeared, Lucius sucked up all of the strength that he could, and stood. He carried her body as far as he could, until he’d reached the end of his task. He took her with him into his next challenge: held her body while an ominous voice asked him if he wanted to sacrifice himself for another or take a bundle of cash.
He chose to sacrifice. And where it brought him was alive, back to the Azelian schoolyard where the ceremony had been held. And Red was still a lifeless form in his arms. There was nothing he could do for himself now. There was nothing he could do for her. The task was over, he’d finished his challenge. With his winnings, he’d lost his soul. He’d lost his soul.

Lucius crinkled his nose down at her, continuing to give the Red Illusion a twice-over, a thrice-over, a forth-over.. it was convincing to the point where it had his captivated, and for a moment his mind caught.. what if this had been Red all along? But no, that was stupid to…
There was no more warmth in Lucius Clyde’s world. There was only the freezing cold pressure threatening to burst him open from the inside out, his limbs and organs in a frozen hyperdrive, everything in his world moving too fast and too slow at the same time, caught in a time trap. Time, it wasn’t humorous by any means, time was something that there was precious little of in this type of situation. Lucius was losing it and losing it fast, trembling and shaking, body convulsing whilst it held Red’s small frame to him.
He was a child in the body of a monster, a little boy swallowed up by the darkness of a shadow. There was no feeling to his world, the only small piece of life he had, truly, genuinely, was in the girl that lay dying in his arms. And it was all his fault. It was his hand that had caused her wounds. His body covered in her blood. He placed kisses at her forehead and her cheeks, over her wounds and anywhere he could get his lips at this point. She wasn’t going to leave him, this was his only chance at life. At living, at normalcy, at love.
“Red, I love you, please,” he pleaded with her a final time, bringing his face back up to look into her deep brown eyes. “I love you, don’t leave me. Hold. On.” He wouldn’t let go, he couldn’t. This woman was his entire existence, the center of his universe. She looked at him with love, she never questioned his jobs, she only smiled and accepted what he’d spoken to her. She stayed, because she’d wanted to. And she was the only one. “Red, hold on..”

Guttural, animalistic sounds tore from Lucius’ lips whist he dug away the eye from the wolf’s howling body, yanking and tearing from the socket with a less than gentle manor, blood cascading over his giant hand as he went about his work. Finally, after too much time, the eye…
Lucius crinkled his nose down at her, continuing to give the Red Illusion a twice-over, a thrice-over, a forth-over.. it was convincing to the point where it had his captivated, and for a moment his mind caught.. what if this had been Red all along? But no, that was stupid to think. Sure, she was a wolf, and yeah, okay, maybe he remembered her looking the way she had the one time they’d had a full moon together. But they were only playing at his emotions. She’d close her eyes any minute and fizzle off and dissolve, the little bits of the delusion fading off in the wind while he was whisked home.
And then she opened her mouth to speak. Her voice, saying his name, no duplicate in all the world to carry the tune she had when she did a simple, blessed thing like saying his name. His world, the entirety of it, every thought and breath and heartbeat came to a stuttering halt as she went on to say the three words that dared penetrate his skin, ‘i love you’. This wasn’t a lucid dream he would win and conquer. They’d taken her, they’d caged her as an animal here for him to kill. This was a nightmare.
Dropping the stone immediately, a cascade of emotion broke out within Lucius that had never happened prior to these series of unfortunate events. Tears stained his cheeks as he desperately reached for her tiny, battered, bloody, broken frame, pulling her to his monster body. Shaking, he was trembling, realization hitting him hard, the weight of a train slamming into his skull throbbing within the confines of his body. “No, Red, no, oh, God, no,” he mumbled and stuttered, pressing her tightly to his chest. “Not you, please, fucking, just, please not you.”
His eyes scanned over her in a blurried state, tears coverting his vision. “I’m so fucking sorry, oh my God, Red, please, don’t die on me. I didn’t know… I didn’t mean to, oh, fuck, I’m sorry, I love you.” He went on like this for some time, his words a cluttered string of mumbles and slurrs and run on sentence as he held her. “Please don’t die on me, please stay, I’ll help you..”

It had taken Lucius incredibly too long to finally reach this point, through the treacherous layout of the entire assessment task from beginning to the almost too-good-to-be-true soon-to-be-ending. From the moment he’d stepped into this challenge of fantastical reality,…
Guttural, animalistic sounds tore from Lucius’ lips whist he dug away the eye from the wolf’s howling body, yanking and tearing from the socket with a less than gentle manor, blood cascading over his giant hand as he went about his work. Finally, after too much time, the eye tore free! In his hand, Lucius Clyde held the last and final key to his assessment challenge, the one that would take him home. Or wherever it was he would be traveling to next, Mr. Asher had mumbled something about a paradise of sorts to gather prizes before given the chance to return home. ‘Choose wisely,’ Lucius had remembered being cautioned, ‘hell awaits the wrong answer.’
Whatever, had been Lucius thought, and as he gave a last look at the wolf, another sickening smile cracked at his lips. He’d almost been too distracted by the Lupis eye eye to take notice of much else going on, admiring his prize and the wonderful selection method he’d chosen in which to get it. Maybe he’d get to keep it! He’d take the pretty out of it and toss away the eyeball bits, maybe he’s even take the pretty and string it on a chain for Red or something.
Red. The small body below him was no longer a wolf, and with a frozen shock, he felt very still. Oh, fuck. They’re pulling out the delusion card on me, was his thought, glancing up and around from her shallow breathing to the surrounding forest. “Decent replica job,” he’d commented, offering a shrug. He refused, for one, to believe it as the actual Red. She was somewhere out there, baking or hiding from old people or hanging out with her nerd friends. She couldn’t be.. she wouldn’t be.. no. No, no, no, no, no. It was a trick of the mind, and that was that.
